The City of Rifle has initiated Tier 1 of its Drought Management Plan, requesting residents to voluntarily reduce outdoor water usage as western Colorado continues to experience low water conditions.
Tier 1 aims for a 10% reduction in water usage through voluntary conservation efforts. The City encourages residents to adopt water-wise practices to preserve local water resources while maintaining healthy landscapes.
Residents can help conserve water by following these lawn watering tips:
- Avoid watering lawns every day. Watering less frequently encourages deeper root growth and healthier, more drought-resistant lawns. Lawns watered daily tend to develop shallow root systems that are more susceptible to dry conditions.
- Don’t water during the heat of the day. Hot temperatures and windy conditions increase evaporation and reduce watering efficiency.
By implementing these practices, the community can collectively contribute to mitigating the effects of the ongoing drought.
